Evergreen Cemetery – Grand Street Section

The Evergreen Cemetery is a large cemetery located in two places within the town limits of Susquehanna, the older section on Grand Street and the larger section on the Pleasant Avenue hillside –both sections within easy walking distance of each other. The Grand Street location seems to host the earliest burials, i.e. the middle to late 1800’s and many deaths throughout the early 1900’s. Several of the older stones are now indiscernible, time worn to the point that all surfaces of the memorial stones are smooth where once important information was lovingly carved. Some of the heavier stones have sunk deep into the earth, sometimes only allowing a surname to be viewed while other taller stones have toppled forward or have broken in half. While a few of the taller stones have been braced and show signs of repair, the rain and weather have taken its toll as inscriptions have slowly but surely faded with time. The granite and marble stones have weathered very well, the inscription and writings are clear and legible, the high quality workmanship appears as fine as the day they were fashioned. This section is very well taken care of, mown and clear of all brush and over growth. All stones that were legible or mostly legible have been photographed and where possible, a rubbing was done to extract the information and cataloged on the corresponding spreadsheet.

The Pleasant Avenue section of the Evergreen Cemetery is in a beautiful setting – a high open field complimented with a few wide spreading oak trees nicely placed throughout the various segments. This is all one big burial ground, but because there are a few drive throughs, it is easier to partition it off into sections or segments. The first section is on the lowest left hand side of the drive in and will be referred to as Section 1- over 300 names are located within this section. White pillars and a memorial marker to our veterans compliment the drive through to the next segment of the cemetery and this will be referred to as Section 2. Over 500 names are contained in this well maintained area. Throughout this cemetery, everything is very neat and tidy, all mown and trimmed and very well taken care of. There are two more sectors within this wide spreading cemetery but just the Grand Street section and Sections 1 and 2 of the Pleasant Avenue segment will be posted at this time.
