Leon Red Geer

My name is Ray Rockwell.  I was raised in the hills and backwoods of northeast Pennsylvania. For the past few years my wife, Carol and I have spent our winters in Lady Lake, FL.  My mother was the baby of thirteen, having many nieces and nephews, some older than she.

Her nephew, Leon Geer, aka Red, two years older than my mother, joined the US Navy.  The 2nd World War was raging, so at a very young age he became a Navy pilot, stationed aboard the aircraft carrier Enterprise in the Pacific.

After the war, Red became the manager of the Veterans Airfield in Bloomington Indiana, also giving flying lessons.  During one lesson, he became aware that after take off, one of the landing gears of his Aeronca airplane had come loose and was dangling below the plane, making it impossible to land the plane without wrecking.  Very coolly, he had his student fly the plane, while he took off his belt, opened the door, climbed out onto the strut and did a quick fix by pulling the gear back into place and securing it with his belt.  They landed the plane without incident!! (This came from an article in “Flying” magazine February 1949.)

Also, being an acrobatic pilot, he was asked, along with about 30 other pilots, to participate in the National Air Show in Miami, on January 8th, 1949.  While practicing his stunts, his plane crashed and he was killed.  That was January 1st, 1949.  We had always been told that it happened somewhere in the Everglades near Miami.

My wife and I were on our way to Lady Lake this January 1st, then, while somewhere in North Carolina my cell phone rang.  It was my sister Diane- she is our family genealogist.  She was all excited.  “You’ll never guess where Red was when he wrecked his plane?”  “Where?” I asked.  “North of Leesburg in the swamp off Eagles Nest Road!” she said.

Oh my god!  I was shaken.  I never told Diane about the old plane.  I knew exactly where the wreck was.  We had gone by it in our boat at least 50 times.  Right there beside the canal from Fisherman’s Wharf to Lake Griffin, there was an airplane motor with the propeller still attached, fairly well bent, but still there.  During World War 2, Leesburg Airport was an Army airfield, so we had all assumed that maybe some trainee had wrecked while on some training flight.

The local newspaper article (The Leesburg Commercial} headline said:  Stunt Flier Killed Sat. In Crash North Of City.  He was staying at the Eagles Nest Fish Camp with friends, “and while stunting low, his plane fell into the swamp.”  “He was practicing stunts with his souped-up trainer plane with a 450 HP Pratt and Whitney engine when the wreck occurred”. The article went on to say “the search began immediately, but it was the next day before the body could be removed, cutting the plane apart with hacksaws”.   “Part of the plane had sunk about five feet into the muck,” the paper said.

After recuperating from my trip from Pennsylvania, and being a bright, sunny day, some friends and I got in my boat and went to the wreck site to take pictures of the motor, fuselage, and fuel tank and whatever else was left.  The ID plate was still attached to the tank and still legible after all those years in the Florida weather, and still smelling of fuel.

There is no doubt.  This is my cousin Red Geer’s Stearman Plane.

Was I brought here to solve this mystery?  For me, and my brothers and sister and other relatives, after 62 years to the day, this puts an end on the story of our departed 24 year old cousin Red, and with the internet, and my sister, now everyone knows.  And of all the many coincidences in my life, this has to rate way above number one!

Anyone that may have any more information about my cousin Leon (Red) Geer, or the plane wreck please contact me.  My email is: rrockwell10@gmail.com or my phone: 570-442-1542.

This is a true story that has taken 62 years to solve – all pictures, newspaper articles concerning this amazing man –our cousin -can be found to the right in the gallery under the heading, “Leon Red Geer”….

The Wall (also known as the West Preston) Cemetery

Located outside of Thompson, on the Wrighter’s Lake Road, the Wall Cemetery is another small, older cemetery located within Wayne County, PA. Up until two years ago, this cemetery was over grown, neglected and hardly recognizable as a graveyard. With many thanks going to the American Legion Riders Post 86 of Susquehanna, PA and their hard work, it is now a very neat, well preserved cemetery. Because of their diligence, the lovely stone wall that encases the front entrance is now intact, all the brush, bushes have been cut back and it gives the presence of a peaceful country resting place for approximately 100 burials. Most of the stones are intact and clearly legible, corresponding photographs have been posted in the gallery under the “Wall Cemetery”.

The Story of the Auxiliary of the Strider/Tesky Post 86 of Susquehanna, PA

World War I was over. Returned veterans were struggling to obtain proper care and just compensation for their disabled comrades, to gain jobs, to start into civilian lives for themselves, and to prevent the security and freedom of America for which they had fought from being lost in peace. The women of their families wanted to help. To supplement the strength of the newly organized American Legion, the mothers, wives, sisters and daughters of the Legionnaires, those of the war dead, and the women veterans, formed The American Legion Auxiliary.

In the gallery, please find some interesting papers that recount the actions and events that took place during the early stages of the American Legion Auxiliary’s Post 86 in Susquehanna, PA…….

Ianthus and Hannah Storer Walker

Researching family history is a bit like unraveling a big ball of tangled yarn….if you have patience and perseverance, you might end up with enough yarn to make a nice sweater but if you give up too easily and cut away half the knots, you might only have enough for a pair of small mittens. The same goes with searching out family members from the past, sometimes it just take time, patience and perseverance. And with the right mixture of all three, you might be able to sort out some of your relatives! That was the way it seemed when a few years ago, I began to be interested in Ianthus and Hannah Walker, my great, great grandparents. I had seen beautiful portraits of both and I realized that I didn’t know too much about them-where they were born, where they had lived and what other children they might have had. I only knew that they were my grandfather’s– Ray Milton Rockwell– grandparents. Ray Rockwell’s mother, Mary (Walker) Rockwell was their daughter and Mary (Walker) Rockwell had a twin sister, Sarah (Walker) Carnegie.

It was only by chance that I happened upon Ianthus’s civil war card at a Veterans Administration and my interest was peaked when I learned that he was buried alongside his first wife, Hannah (Storer) Walker in the Brandt Cemetery in Brandt, PA. I was thrilled to see that the names and dates were still pretty legible. The quest was on!

Ianthus W. Walker was born on July 13, 1836 in the little town of Sanford, NY to unknown parents. He gives no information about parents or siblings in his Civil War Pension Papers, just his birthdate and where he was born. His name first shows up on an 1850 census as a 14 year old boy living with a Thomas and Debbie Henderson, in 1860 he is married to Hannah Storer and they have a small daughter, Harriet. He is elusive in the 1870 census – his name can not be found. In 1880, Ianthus is living in Tioga County, NY and is married to Abigail (Carnegie) with several children, I have found out later through Ianthus’s Civil War Pension Papers that some of the children are Hannah’s and some are Abigail’s.

Ianthus Walker once farmed a large piece of land in Stevens Point but sometime after his return from Civil War, he moved to Brandt and was employed by neighbors to do farming and light carpenter work, at one time he worked at the Brandt Chair Factory. He came home a wounded man, was only able to work some of the time and as he got older and was steadily worsened by his wounds; he was barely able to keep employment at all. It has only been through Ianthus’s Civil War Pension Papers that I have been able to piece together this life story…I have posted numerous pages from his pension papers along with his and Hannah’s portraits, their gravestones, so you, too, can see how the Civil War had affected this small family from Harmony Township.
